Probiotics
Probiotics are live organisms that when taken in a sufficient amount, confer a health benefit on the host. They have been a subject of much research and their benefits have been shown to be extremely wide-ranging. From boosting one’s immune system to even treating obesity, probiotics have shown to be extremely effective.
A study has gone on to show that probiotics can be used in the treatment of depression too. Evidenced by the “gut-brain axis,” it has been proven that there is a correlation between an imbalance in gut bacteria and depression. This is because 90% of our body’s serotonin is produced in our intestines where these bacteria are nurtured. Thus, probiotics are extremely beneficial in restoring the gut flora, thus improving one’s mood.
Other studies have shown that probiotics can be used as an alternative for antibiotics for certain strains of bacteria.
